About Reedsburg-Westfield Mutual Insurance
In the mid 1800s, farmers joined together to insure their properties when stock insurance companies were reluctant to insure farm property for fire coverage. Twenty-five people in a single township with $25,000 of insurable property were the requirements to organize a town mutual. Our area was fortunate enough to have two groups of these industrious individuals, who took it upon themselves to protect their assets and establish such companies‚ Reedsburg Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company and Westfield Mutual Farmers Insurance Company.
Reedsburg-Westfield Mutual Insurance Company was established when Reedsburg Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company (established in 1876) and Westfield Mutual Farmers Insurance Company (also established in 1876) merged effective January 1, 1981.
On January 1, 2024, Baraboo Mutual Insurance Company (BMI) merged into Reedsburg Westfield Mutual allowing the cooperative to serve more neighboring counties and continue it’s growth. Further more, Reedsburg Westfield became a Chapter 611 Domestic mutual to serve customers in all counties within the State of Wisconsin as well as affiliated with Mt. Morris Insurance Company in order to establish and secure reinsurance.
The insurance industry has undergone many changes over the last century but town mutuals still have the same premise‚ neighbor insuring neighbor. Policyholders own this company and have a stake in it. Reedsburg-Westfield Mutual is a local cooperative owned and operated by a Board of Directors made up of local community members.
Insuring farms, homes and personal property since 1876, Reedsburg-Westfield Mutual has been around and has evolved with the industry. We still insure farms, homes, personal property and we have also extended our coverage to mobile homes, renters, watercraft, recreational vehicles, and offer liability coverage. However, some things have not changed over the past 130+ years‚ our great customer service to our policyholders at a competitive rate while retaining our hometown values.
